Our Favorite Thanksgiving Prayer

Some family traditions come out of necessity and I guess that is what you could say about our family tradition of sharing a very special Thanksgiving prayer. Our dad was a big man with a real deep voice and he always said the most beautiful blessing especially on Thanksgiving.  The Thanksgiving after our brother died, we knew that he would not be able to say the blessing and it was a big deal to the whole family.  What would we do?

As if I was being guided by our mother who had died 12 years previously, I started looking through her old collection of Ideals Magazines and came across a Thanksgiving Prayer that would become our new family tradition.  You see, our dad died a few months later.

This prayer is simple but means so much especially to families like ours who have recently lost loved ones.  My sisters and I as well as some of our children now share this prayer with friends who have experienced such a loss during the year.  I will be mailing mine out tomorrow and I will pray that this little prayer will bring them comfort this Thanksgiving.

Grace for Thanksgiving Day
Alice Kennelly Roberts

Dear God,
Wherever we may be…On this Thanksgiving Day…
Gathered with loved ones in our homes…
Or many miles away…
We bow our heads, remembering those…
Who shared Thanksgiving past…
Those who have walked with us awhile…
Whose love will always last…
We thank Thee for the joy of friends…
The food before us set…
And for a tiny Pilgrim band…
Whose trials we can’t forget…
Help us to sift the good and bad…
The hatred and the strife…
Grant us the wisdom and the strength…
To lead a useful life.
Amen
