Yesterday was magical! Our granddaughter was visiting with us. I excitedly showed her the beginnings of an afghan I am crocheting for her. Surprisingly, she recognized it immediately. “I did not know you could crochet, Joan-Joan.” She is an artistic child, and I really just wanted her to approve of the colors I had chosen. [...]
As senior citizens, we simply must remember to approach every event with enthusiasm and to participate in life with joy! I love my older cousins – but even more than loving them, I admire their enthusiasm and willingness to be a part of all our crazy activities.
She came from a hardworking stock of people who never made much money but certainly were rich in many other ways. She never went to a fancy ball and was never presented to society but she was a lady just the same. She loved poetry and used to write poems when she found the time. Grandma raised 11 children, grew her own garden every year, was one of the best cooks for miles around, and was a deeply devout and spiritual woman. I think I would have admired her even if she wasn’t my Grandmother.
As grandparents, we often wonder how our grandchildren will remember us when we are gone. Are we really making the impact on them that we would like? Let us all be the inspiration that Granny Julia was for Kimberly!
“Look, Joan-Joan, look what I found! Isn’t it beautiful?” My 6 y/o granddaughter had found a daffodil in the back yard. I said, “Oh yes, it is very beautiful. The daffodil is telling us that spring is coming!” Jessica immediately jumped up and down and up and down and up and down shouting “spring is coming, spring is coming, spring is coming!”
I learned a new lesson from our granddaughter today – we went to the grocery store. She carefully wrote out our grocery list and off we went. But we somehow arrived at the store without our list. Jessica said, “Don’t worry, JoanJoan, I remember them all!” And she did! We quickly bought groceries with the help of her young memory. Yippee! From now on, she is going to the store with me so I don’t forget anything, even when I forget the list!
Making a journal of the grandchildren’s cute sayings is a fun project. Of course, since Whitey is legally blind, we do this a little differently. When one of the grandchildren says something cute, sweet, delightful, funny or wonderful, Whitey makes a note with his 20-20 pen and a legal pad. (We think everything they do [...]
